Shalom Nchom (who goes by Shalom Blac) has 144,000 Instagram followers and a highly successful makeup-driven YouTube channel, but her rise to fame was not easy. Shalom is a burn survivor. She suffered from a hot frying oil accident as a kid and has learned to overcome her insecurities to help inspire others. Shalom now fronts her own beauty movement that showcases the power of makeup while inspiring others to feel comfortable in their own skin.
In this week’s episode of the PEOPLE’s List, Shalom, 20, talks about her experience with bullies, saying it started in middle school. “They’d call me monster, two-face, scar face and just laugh.”

And how she lost her sense of self because of it. “I just didn’t feel like there was a purpose for me because I can’t imagine going to school and just keep getting bullied and picked-on because of they way you looked. And I just kind of wondered ‘Why me, why did this have to happen to me?'”
But she says it was her mom who kept her spirit up and reassured her she does have a purpose, which she found through her powerful makeup tutorials.
