By now you’re all caught up on Ellen DeGeneres‘shilarious jokes from the Oscars (and maybe you’ve ordered yourself a pizza to celebrate). Now, it’s time to talk about her hair. The star is known for her signature short do, and on the stage Sunday her pixie reached the pinnacle of its career. Dying to know the secrets behind her chic coif? We have the exclusive rundown straight from her stylist.
Though you wouldn’t think DeGeneres needed to spend too much time prepping before her hosting gig — she has her do down to an art at this point — as it turns out, the TV star had been planning out her look three months prior to the show.
“Believe it not, even though her hair is short, there are lots of different ways we can make it look,” celebrity hairstylist Laini Reeves told PEOPLE. “We can make it look funky or classic or rock ‘n’roll, so we tried every possible way. More product, less product — over the three months we’ve been working at trying to do different looks and seeing what’s going to be the right thing with all of the outfits and what’s going to be appropriate for the host of the Oscars.”
DeGeneres wore a variety of Saint Laurent suits during the show (“I’m very flattered and honored that he [Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane] wanted to put clothes on me,” she said during the pre-show), and Reeves made sure to change up her hair with each look.
For her monologue, Reeves kept DeGeneres’s hair “very soft with a lot of texture and movement.” Next, she moved on to a “a little bit softer” Mia Farrow-inspired look, and finally, she “finish[ed] the night a little bit edgy and funky.”
“We like her hair to look like she can run her fingers through it,” Reeves explained. “We don’t like a fixed look. To get hair to have that type of movement, you have to have a cocktail of products that can respond and work that way so there is a lot of thought that goes into it.”
Reeves selected a mixture of René Furterer products including the modeling paste and styling wax for texture. “I can honestly say that she is one of the most stylish people that I know, and her taste is impeccable,” Reeves said. “She has a very strong opinion on how she likes to look, and for me that works really well because we meet on such a high level. I have high standards and I’m very specific when I do my work and put a lot of pride in it, so I think we met at a really good level of respect.”
