How does Kerry Washington get into character when shooting Scandal? It’s all about the clothes. Washington, who plays D.C. crisis manager Olivia Pope on the hit show, reveals that everything from the watches to the necklaces she wears help her play the role.
In PEOPLE’s exclusive cut of Washington’s episode of BlueFly’s Closet Confessions (above), she also talks about the brand that makes her feel instantly smarter and more sophisticated while giving us a peek into her dressing room.
Washington discusses the jewelry her character dons and shows off the designer suits she wears while shooting, but it’s one very specific kind of accessory that really allows the actress to make the transformation into Pope: the heels. “Shoes are really important to finding the character, because once I know how the woman walks, then I know a lot more about her,” Washington explains. “We really gravitate towards these platform heels,” she adds, showing a pair of skyscraper patent Christian Louboutins that she swears are really comfortable.
So, is Pope’s sophisticated and serious style affecting how Washington dresses away from the set? Not exactly. The actress likens the wardrobe to armor, which she sheds once the cameras stop rolling. “I take it all off and put flip-flops on and go home!”
