It’s no secret that Mandy Moore has been a longtime fan of designer Lela Rose — she frequently wears Rose’s designs and has snagged a front row seat for many of the designer’s Fashion Week shows. So it was no surprise that when Rose was looking for a star to accompany her to Monday’s CFDA Awards in New York, Moore was top of mind.

“Dressing Mandy is always a fun experience,” Rose tells PEOPLE of the pair’s collaboration, which began in April. “Not only is she stunning but such a genuine and lovely person.”

The cream column dress with shoulder embellishment, which was inspired by a design Moore spotted at Rose’s spring 2012 show, was such a perfect match for the singer that she only required one fitting the day before the awards ceremony. “I was so taken by the short version of this dress on the runway, and was so excited that they custom-made me a long version for the event,” she tells PEOPLE. “I love the juxtaposition of the soft white draping and the hard edge of the metal- and pearl- encrusted shoulders! I’m all about a strong shoulder right now — it feels confident.”

Rose agreed with Moore’s decision to go for a strong look. “The custom gown I made for her to wear, with its clean lines and bold embellishments, will so wonderfully complement both her inner and outer beauty,” she says. And given her appearance in our best-dressed gallery, we’d say their collaboration was a success!
