Emily Blunt's Whirlwind World Style Tour: Three Dresses in Three Cities in 24 Hours

Posted on

When we imagine being a movie star, we imagine walking red carpets over the globe in one gorgeous dress after another, barely stopping for a sip of champagne before hopping back on our private jet for the next big event. Well, that’s what Emily Blunt’s life actually was like Wednesday, when she attended the premieres for Edge of Tomorrow in London, Paris and N.Y.C. — all in one day. We’ve got the scoop on her three gorgeous dresses, as well as the breakdown of how to get her perfectly chic N.Y.C. updo, all below.

“It’s like Superman. This is the super hero part of it,” Blunt told reporters in London of her quick-change act. “I have like earrings that could take you eye out and everything.” She also admitted to planning to catch up on her beauty sleep on her cross-Atlantic journey, if somebody would just pipe down. I think I’m gonna try to get some sleep. I’ve told everyone not to talk to me, [though costar] Tom Cruise can be a chatty little Cathy!” she joked. “I’ve got really ugly pajamas for the flight. Like so ugly. They’re almost a bit tribal.”

Ugly certainly wasn’t a word we’d use to describe Blunt’s three premiere dresses. The first, in London, was an Osman number printed in a swirling jacquard, which she accessorized with David Yurman jewels and pink suede Kurt Geiger heels. For Paris, she changed into something much edgier: A high-necked David Koma number with sheer panels, worn with those star-loved Graziela Gems ear cuffs, Melissa Kaye Jewelry rings and Christian Louboutins. “I love his stuff — it’s supercool, super edgy,” Blunt said of the designer. “This is how you pump up for a movie!”

For N.Y.C., she was back in her glam mode, wearing a scarlet Prada gown with fuchsia accessories, also by the brand, which she offset with a fierce pink lip and fiery Lorraine Schwartz jewels. But it was her elegant bun that had us talking in the office, so we got her hairstylist Laini Reeves to dish on the look for us. (Hello, wedding party hair!)

First things first: Each look was totally different and not influenced by the fact she’d been all done up twice in the past 18 hours. “We [saw] each look completely differently and our approach was not affected by the last look,” Reeves said. For N.Y.C., “Once Emily decided what dress she would wear, make-up artist Jenn Streicher and I discussed hair and make-up. With this dress, Jenn wanted a bold pink lip, so I wanted to make the hair very clean and almost understated. I went for quality, not quantity.”

To achieve her “sleek, simple and classic side bun” (which Reeves said only took a few bobby pins — “preparation is everything!” she advised), she prepped Blunt’s wet hair with René Furterer “Vegetal” mousse, then blew it out. She then brushed it into a low ponytail to the side, worked in a little of the line’s styling wax for texture and backcombed it before twisting in into a low bun, securing with bobby pins. Spraying it with René Furterer “Vegetal” finishing spray as needed for hold kept everything secure throughout.

What do you think of Blunt’s pretty low bun? Which of her dresses was your favorite? Tell us in the comments!
