Drew Barrymore's New Makeup Line Gives Her Butterflies

Many celebrities have lent their lovely faces to major makeup campaigns, but few have gone as far as to create their own lines. Drew Barrymore, however, has never followed the Hollywood playbook, and now her new beauty collection, Flower, is on shelves — and we’re already big fans.

Here, the A-lister tells PEOPLE about her latest venture (available at Walmart), her favorite red carpet moment of all time and what product she loves to borrow from her daughter, 3-month-old Olive:

What inspired you to launch Flower?

I’ve been sitting in a makeup chair since I was 6 years old, and I love how aspirational those rooms are. I’ve seen women empower and transform themselves. I’ve worn makeup my whole life for film and fashion and worked with the best makeup artists in the world and I love what makeup does for you. Then I was the co-creative director at Cover Girl for six years, and when I finished my contract, it was like I had gone to college for six years and I wanted to know what I would do with my degree.

What was the development process like?

I banged my head against the wall trying to figure out how to do things different. We’re doing prestige formulas at mass. That’s what people deserve. I spent as much of my time testing pigments and shades as I did fighting price points. We didn’t put money into marketing, we’re putting everything into the formulas and therefore into people’s hands. That’s what excites me and gives me butterflies. I would love to be a game change.

What’s one new thing in your purse you can’t live without?

Every week it’s something new until I clean out my bag. This week I have our Flower Lip Butter in Haute Honeysuckle ($6.98). I love it, I love it, I love it!  And the lip crayon in Sheer Blossom ($7.98). I don’t even have the packaged one. I have the sample. It’s cracked and chipped and the top is broken and I’m carrying it around like an egg baby. It has the perfect lip tint that you want. Makes it look like you made an effort.

Do you ever borrow products from Olive?

My baby girl is using Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment. It’s amazing. I’m a real drugstore girl. I use the Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Oil Controlling Towelettes. I break out if I don’t use them.

What was your favorite red carpet beauty moment?

We did this big blonde hair for the L.A. premiere of Grey Gardens. Giant big blonde hair with very ’60s makeup. I had more hair in my head than I knew what to do with. And for the Music and Lyrics premiere in L.A. I had this black Roberto Cavalli halter dress and big gold hoop earrings. My hair was in a very tight bun and my makeup was very bronzy and natural.

Of all the hair colors you’ve experimented with, which has been your favorite?

This is 100 percent easy: blonde hair, black tips. I could only have it for so long because of my Cover Girl contract so I just had to chop it all off. Happiest time ever.
