The Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards is a time when American designers get to strut their stuff on the red carpet, often with a statuesque model or A-list starlet on their arm, dressed head to toe in the designer’s wares. For Alexander Wang, however, the night was even more special than that: He got to attend in the company of Mango. Yes, Mango. As in “You can’t have-a the Mango!,” late-’90s SNL, Chris Kattan alter ego Mango.
And (true to form) he arrived in a spangled beret — though the rest of his look was updated to a more Wang-appropriate ensemble. Gone were the gold-spangled short shorts, replaced by a more relaxed-fit leather pair (a Wang signature). And he got a high-fashion upgrade thanks to his shiny dress shoes, glamorous sweeping cape and V-neck top. The spit curl sideburns remained the same, of course, as they are a classic that will never go out of style.
Mango’s appearance on the red carpet was teased in an Instagram video on Wang’s site, where the designer promised a Mango-related reveal on June 3. Now that we’ve seen what the go-go dancer-slash-bewitching male model has to offer on the red carpet, we can’t wait to see what he has in store on Wang’s website tomorrow.
