First things first: If you haven’t seen Elizabeth Taylor in the infamous Cleopatra, go ahead and rent it on Netflix now. In honor of the film’s 50th anniverary, which started Taylor’s two great love affairs — with Richard Burton and Bulgari — the famed jeweler created earrings inspired by Taylor’s role in the film.
The blinged-out danglers (featured in the inset at left) are made of 18-carat gold, spinel turquoise and diamonds and are “reflective of the dramatic colors and motifs of ancient Egypt,” according to the press release. The price tag? Estimated from anywhere between $18,000 and $22,000.
But even if you wanted to buy the baubles, you couldn’t. They are headed to the auction block as part of Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on Dec. 11, 2013, and all the proceeds from the gems will go the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
The auction is part of a partnership between Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Bulgari, which honors the the film and the legacy of Taylor and Richard Burton. And since most of us won’t be getting our hands on the earrings, a more affordable option is to nab the 50th Anniversary Cleopatra Blu-ray set.
