High neck. Sleeves. Full-skirt. After seeing actress Vera Farmiga’s dress from the front, we were ready to write it off as another basic black demure ball gown. And then we saw her Theyskens’ Theory dress from behind and we had to rescind our original commentary.
Because the design features an open back that dips so low, we were almost expecting Farmiga’s underwear to make an appearance at the Emmys. Scratch the word demure from our description.
Add that to the fact that the skirt on the Bates Motel star’s dress is crazy-voluminous (“It’s like the butt bump on Cinderella’s stepsisters’ dresses,” astutely observed one editor) and we officially could no longer use the adjective basic either.
And Farmiga wasn’t the only actress to go with a gown that was deceptively full-coverage or simple from the front. Michelle Dockery’s two-tone Prada design had an oversize bow tie at the neck and a totally open back, Padma Lakshmi showed off a skin-baring rear view and even Zooey Deschanel flashed some unexpected flesh.
What do you think of Farmiga’s gown? Which Emmys dress did you like best from the back?
