No longer feeling like a pint-sized tomboy, Avril Lavigne strolled down the red carpet at the launch of her Abbey Dawn shoe and handbag lines teetering at an unfamiliar height.
“The fact that I’m wearing heels right now is kind of a big deal for me. I’m really tall now,” the rocker told PEOPLE Tuesday night at L.A.’s Viper Room. During the event, Lavigne performed for fans, shared a friendly hello with ex-husband Deryck Whibley and rubbed elbows with fellow designer Kimora Lee Simmons.
Lavigne, who launched her Abbey Dawn clothing line in 2008, has watched the brand evolve from simple tops to a full-blown collection seen last year at New York Fashion Week. She also has a signature fragrance — Forbidden Rose — and is set to launch some Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips later this year.
But her aesthetic has changed some: after four years in fashion, Lavigne’s new line, sold online in partnership with Just Fabulous, is “a little more geared toward an older age group,” she said. “It’s feminine, it’s sexy, it’s flattering, it’s black, it’s rock ‘n’ roll.”
And the inspiration is simple. “I’m 27,” she said, laughing. “I’m getting old.”
