American Music Awards

Bras and Underpants Are the Real Red Carpet Winners of the AMAs

Posted on

The American Music Awards red carpet is always filled with daring dresses, bold beauty moments and generally lots of stop-and-stare moments. Case in point: Gigi Hadid’s head-turning red carpet entrance. But the wackiest trend to win over the night was the undergarment craze. Normally there are a lot of super-high slits, dramatically low-cut necklines, but eight celebrities took skin-baring to a new level with their bra-and-underwear-accentuating outfits.

First, there was the trio who intentionally exposed their bras under blazers and jackets. Taraji P. Henson went super simple in a men’s dress shirt that showed off a lace black bra underneath, but she played up her beauty look with a shimmery eye and bold purple lip. “I wanted to go for an effortless look, because I’m not really music, I’m just here because I’m a fan of music,” she said on the E! red carpet pre-show. “I felt something easy, breezy, I’ve never done a look like this. Actually I’m just a Barbie for my team, I let them dress me and go, okay, is this what I’m wearing tonight?”

Nina Dobrev’s glittery embroidered Zuhair Murad blazer and shorts couldn’t distract us from her exposed bustier paired with Stella Luna ankle-strap pumps and an Edie Parker clutch. And Bella Thorne went with a shrunken Anthony Franco blazer which totally exposed her black bra and gold body chain accessory.

Rebecca Romijn and Ariana Grande took the already risqué trend a step further by ditching the jackets and exposing a strapless Cosabella bra (on Romijn) and lace bustier top (Grande) to contrast with their modest full skirt and wide-leg trousers, respectively.

Then there was another crew on the carpet who decided to highlight their upper thighs instead. Hannah Davis wore a see-through Zuhair Murad Couture purple embellished gown that showed off her high-waisted briefs. Kat Graham wore a plunging fishnet black Labourjoisie gown that was sheer everywhere. And Idina Menzel went super-sexy in a black bustier bodysuit with a translucent embellished skirt by Thai Nguyen Atelier.

And that’s to say nothing of the stars who decided to forgo undergarments altogether — Chrissy Teigen, we’re looking at you. Good news for host Gigi Hadid: If she was planning on calming any nerves by picturing the audience in their underwear… they helped her out by already wearing theirs in plain sight!
