Like the rest of the United States, Ryan Lochte was also shocked to find out that his teammate Michael Phelps was married at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
On Wednesday, PEOPLE confirmed that Phelps and Nicole Johnson tied the knot in a secret ceremony on June 13 in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Although Phelps told PEOPLE at the Rio Olympics in August that a future date was set for his and Johnson’s wedding, the gold medalist was already married — and even Lochte didn’t know!
“I had no idea. He said he was going to get married like a year after Rio and everything and apparently he was already married? I don’t know,” a surprised Lochte, 32, told Hollywood Today Live.
Despite the fact that Lochte wasn’t invited to Phelps’ ceremony in June, he said that he’ll still invite his longtime teammate to his and his fiancée Kayla Rae Reid‘s wedding: “Yes, I’ll invite him.”
And although Lochte hinted at competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in August on the Today show, he made his official announcement on Friday. “Ladies and gentlemen, I will be there in 2020,” he said with a smile.
But before Lochte begins training for his next Olympics, the professional athlete is focused on Dancing with the Stars — and winning the coveted Mirrorball Trophy.
“Right now I’m taking my mental break from the sport, because I’ve been doing it for —” Lochte said of swimming before pro partner Cheryl Burke chimed in, “You’ve got Dancing. You don’t have time to be training.”
“Yeah, I have no time to be training. So when Dancing is all said and done, I’m going to finally go on a vacation with my fiancée,” the swimmer said. He also detailed how he met Reid (he got her number through mutual friends and they met in person at a club in L.A.) and complimented the Playboy model on her constant extension of love and support.
“She has been seriously my biggest supporter. I live with her and she’s always been so positive and just kept me moving forward — like the eye on the prize,” Lochte said, and added of the DWTS competition, “And for our case, it’s the Mirrorball.”
Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
