WATCH: Olympic Gymnast Aly Raisman Says Carbs Are Not 'The Enemy'!

Posted on

Gymnast Aly Raisman may be a “health nut,” but the elite gymnast indulges in her fair share of sweet treats.

As Raisman heads into the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the athlete is determined to eat “very healthy” – for the most part.

“If I’m craving something that’s not as healthy I definitely splurge,” she told PEOPLE this spring.

“If you’re craving chocolate or dessert I think you should have some of it. I think that’s living a normal, healthy, balanced diet.”

She adds: “I eat a lot of carbs. For some reason, Americans think eating carbs is like the enemy. But, as an athlete, we’re supposed to, carbs is the key to having energy and the key to being able to recover after a workout as well.”

Raisman is one of five gymnasts to earn spots on the Rio-bound U.S. women’s gymnastics Olympic team. Raisin’s teammates are Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian.

Raisman names pizza as her favorite guilty pleasure, “but I love dessert too, like cheesecake and chocolate cake. And cheeseburgers. I love food in general.”

A girl after our own hearts.

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will kick off on Aug. 5.
