Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, were greeted with open arms on Wednesday in the northern Alberta town of Slave Lake.

Residents of the area – that was heavily damaged by wildfire in May – held up banners that read, “We love you for coming” and “Welcome Will and Kate.”

Among the signs of the disaster seen by the royal couple was a burned-out vehicle.

“Having Kate and William take time out of their schedule to come here is such a boost for this community,” Denise Camarneiro, 40, said. “They seem very compassionate. – Simon Perry and Dahvi Shira
