In a last effort to squeeze all they can out of summer, the Dutch royal family spent the day in the sun on their sail boat, Groene Draeck (Dutch for "the Green Dragon") in Amsterdam. Hitting the water was Queen Maxima and her three daughters, Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Alexia Princess Ariana as well as Princess Beatrix (who was Queen until her abdication two years ago). It was perfect timing for the outing, too – Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia started high school just a few days later.

For most, summer vacation means beaches, pools and plenty of sunshine. Not so for Norway's royal family, who escaped to Vardøhus Fortress this August. Commissioned by a Norwegian king hundreds of years ago, this piece of Norwegian history is the northernmost structure of its kind in the entire world. (Yes, they're the Frozen royals come to life.)

Their trip up north was a full family affair, with King Harald, Queen Sonja, along with their children and grandchildren, including Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon. King Harald told a Norwegian newspaper, Nettavisen, that he hoped to teach his grandchildren a bit more about their country (and family's) heritage during the trip. "We can’t just sit back and tell them about history. We have to show it to them, otherwise it gets too boring for the grandchildren."

Unlike their Scandinavian neighbors, the Swedish royals decided to forgo trips up north and stick to the sand and sun. For a family vacation, newlyweds Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia jetted off to Sainte-Maxime, France, with his older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, her husband, Prince Daniel and their 3-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle.

She's a woman of tradition in most things, but especially when it comes to her vacations. This summer (like many, many summers past), 89-year-old Queen Elizabeth headed north to her Scottish home at Balmoral.

The Queen may be away, but her great-grandchildren still had plenty of opportunity to play during a visit to the Festival of British Eventing in Stroud, England. Who was there? Princess Anne's daughter Zara Tindall, Zara's husband Mike and their 18-month-old daughter Mia, as well as Zara's brother Peter Phillips, wife Autumn, and their daughters Savannah and Isla (pictured).

Isla's older sister, Savannah, had no need to watch the competing horses – this pup kept her otherwise occupied.

The Phillips girls weren't the only royal great-grandchildren at the festival. Here, Zara Phillips totes her 18-month-old daughter Mia around Gatcombe Park. The duo attended three days of the festival, along with dad Mike Tindall.

No need for a throne here! Zara and Peter's uncle, Prince Edward (the Queen's youngest), relaxes on the grass on the festival grounds with his wife Sophie and their daughter, Lady Louise.

No one knows how to holiday quite like Princess Beatrice, who's jetted off to the Caribbean, the Swiss Alps, Beijing and Abu Dhabi this year alone. The Spanish island of Ibiza has been the site of her latest getaway, where she's whiled away the hours on a yacht – with Oprah. Vacations don't get much better than that.

The Spanish royal family didn't have to go far to enjoy their summer holiday. King Felipe, Queen Letizia and their two daughters, 9-year-old Leonor, Princess of Asturias, and 8-year-old Infanta Sofia, headed to the Spanish island of Mallorca for an August getaway – but took on some official duties while they were there. Here, the family stops by the Royal Nautical Club in Palma, Mallorca's capital, before the final leg of the Copa del Rey sailing race.

Their trip to Mallorca wasn't only boating and sunbathing. Leaving their daughters at home, King Felipe and Queen Letizia stepped out for a gala dinner in Palma. Never one to slack off when it comes to style (even when she's on vacation!), Letizia rocked a pair of black pants from Hugo Boss and a sheer black top.

19-year-old royal Princess Olympia-Marie of Greece (the eldest child of Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal and Prince Charles's godchild) has had quite the summer. First, she headed to Porto Heli, a resort town in Greece, to soak up some sun.

Later on in August, she really got out of town, traveling to Pink Sands Resort in the Bahamas.
