Princess Beatrice has put her DIY makeover skills to the test as a special gift to mark her grandmother’s 60 years on the throne.
Beatrice, 23, redecorated a cute playhouse that Queen Elizabeth was given as a little girl.
Now, as Britain celebrates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the beautiful renovation of the little Wendy house has been unveiled. The home, called Y Bwthyn Bach (the Small House), was a present from the Welsh people to the then Princess Elizabeth, in March 1932 when she was just 5 years old.
Complete with two rooms upstairs and two rooms downstairs, the cottage can accommodate anyone up to four feet tall. There is a white Welsh dresser and upstairs, and there’s even said to be a working bathroom, complete with towels embroidered with the letter ‘E’.
Built on the grounds of Windsor Great Park near Royal Lodge where Beatrice lives, it has been the perfect playhouse for generations of royal children.
Now, in a documentary made by the BBC, called Our Diamond Queen, Beatrice is giving filmmakers a peek into what she calls “the most glamorous Wendy house ever.”
It has undergone a year-long renovation partly overseen by Beatrice – she modestly says she was “one of the people” – and she explains that it has new curtains, new wiring and a new thatched roof.
The eldest daughter of Fergie, the Duchess of York, says that the Queen wanted “little designs” on the fabrics. “It s such a little house that she wanted little flowers and patterns,” she said. It is stocked with mini china and glass created for the house. A fridge from the royal nursery gives it a ’30s touch.
And there are some “new modern friends who’ve made an appearance as well” she says, as she picks up a teddy bear.
Granny, as she calls her, would “play here growing up. We have been lucky enough to play here as cousins. It’s a big family treat,” she says.
“It’s wonderful that you can have [her cousin Peter Phillips’s daughter] Savannah play in here as well as great-grandchildren in the future.”
The Diamond Queen premieres June 3 starting at 8:00pm ET/PT on BBC AMERICA.
