In a nod to her hosts, Kate, 30, wore a pink kimono-style dress with an orchid pattern by British designer Jenny Packham as they arrived Tuesday.
One of their first stops was at the city’s Botanic Gardens to view their famed orchids, including one named for the couple and one named after William’s late mother, Princess Diana.
The Vanda William Catherine is a free-flowering orchid hybrid of white petals with purple-red spots and a purple lip.
The couple also viewed the 3-ft. tall, white Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana orchid during a moment of reflection.
“It’s a shame,” William said of the fact his mother, who vowed to visit the gardens before her death in 1997, was never able to make a planned trip to Singapore.
“It’s beautiful,” he added of the flower. “Nice, very nice.”
Following their visit to the gardens, William and Kate made their way to the Raffles Hotel where they will be staying for three nights in Singapore. A crowd of around 200 people gathered outside the hotel to cheer their arrival on Tuesday afternoon.
William told the welcome line that it had been “a very long flight, but we’re so happy to be here.”
During their tour of Asia, the couple will have some downtime, including a romantic stay on a remote hideaway on the Solomon Islands.
A Royal Feast
The pair wrapped up their day with an an official welcome dinner at the grand official residence of the President of Singapore, Tony Tan.
Kate, 30, in a dress by Singaporean-born designer Prabul Gurung, and William, in a business suit, talked diplomacy with the president and Prime Minister and helped inspect a guard of honor at the 143-year-old Istana building.
In his speech at dinner, William talked of the couple’s excitement at being in Singapore, and he went on to say that 2012 had been topped off with the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “They have also reminded us of the shared excitement and pleasure we can all feel when the nations of an often divided world come together to celebrate extraordinary feats of human achievement,” he said.
As for the meal, which started with a jazz performance by Compass Entertainment, William and Kate dined on a seven course Chinese dinner.
On the menu: roasted duck with salad and smoked duck with sliced mango; chicken consomme with herbs, spices and wolfberries; steamed fillet of marble goby with crispy bean crumbs in soya sauce; pan-fried Wagyu beef cubes with radish and carrot; braised bean curd with Honshimeiji mushrooms and spinach; stewed La Mian (hand-made noodles) with chicken wonton (dumpling) and bean curd. Dessert was chilled jelly served with mango, sago and pomelo and sliced baked mooncakes.
