Was a royal fan trying to send a less-than-subtle hint to the Duke of Cambridge?

While he and the Duchess were visiting Cambridge Wednesday, Prince William was handed a baby’s onesie decorated with a helicopter and the slogan “Daddy’s little co-pilot” – a gift from well-wisher Samantha Hill of Sudbury, Suffolk, who also brought her 4-week-old daughter Beth to see the royal couple.

Hill, 27, told reporters, “I made it for when his little one comes along. He’s a helicopter pilot, so his baby will think his daddy is cool.”

Dad seemed to think the present was pretty cool, too. Said Hill: “When I gave it to him he said, ‘I’ll keep that,’ and handed it to his aide.”

With a crowd of about 4,000 people to greet them in the Cambridge Market Square, it turned out to be the babies in the crowd who got Kate’s attention – including one 7-month-old who was born on the anniversary of her wedding, April 29.

“She said how cute he was,” said the infant’s mother, Tessa Davies. “His name is James William – the William was named after Prince William. I told her that and she said that was wonderful.”

Sarah Wood, a student at St. John’s College who was holding James, said Kate’s exact words to the baby were, “Hello, cute little man.”

Fans were impressed with Kate’s new hairdo, by Richard Ward. But Kate, in a pale pink MaxMara coat, was concerned about how the blustery weather was affecting it.

Spectator Joanne Baldwin, 30, said, “I told her I loved her new hairstyle, [and] she said: ‘I’m not sure about it. It’s a bit windy today.’ I said don’t worry, it looks lovely.”

The couple are spending a day in Cambridge, visiting the famous university before heading to a homeless charity called Jimmy’s.
