Remembered as both an iconic Hollywood actress and a princess, Grace Kelly would have been 85 on Wednesday.

The beautiful blonde was a “hands-on” mom, as her son Albert described her to PEOPLE, but she was also a style maven whose elegance, poise and aura of cool haven’t worn off over the years.

LIFE has a number of photos – some of which have never been published before – of Kelly and her husband, Prince Rainier III of Monaco. We’re able to share a few with you here.

As LIFE writes, “The tale of the American movie star and Philadelphia native marrying the prince of a small, sensationally wealthy city-state was simply too perfect to ignore.” The story’s appeal obviously hasn’t dimmed.

The royals’ marriage was as much of a fairy tale as their wedding: Nine months and four days after they married, Grace gave birth to daughter Caroline, the first of the couple’s three children. Grace and Rainier were married for 26 years – until she died in 1982 due to injuries stemming from a car accident.

The prince, who never remarried and died in 2005, is buried beside his wife in the Grimaldi family vault, inside the cathedral where they wed.
