Like just about everyone one else on the planet, Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis got up very early on the morning of April 29 to watch the royal wedding.
“My daughter [Jade, 3] and I watched it in bed,” she tells PEOPLE. “It was one of the most precious moments because she’s very into princes and princesses. She said, ‘Mommy, they’re real!'”
Just wait until Jade realizes that Mommy is about to meet – and cook for – that very real royal couple.
“I am super thrilled and nervous,” the celebrity chef, 40, says of cooking for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the July 9 Foundation Polo Challenge at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club – the one event on the couple’s North American tour that’s open to the public.
“I’m a fan of polo,” she adds, “but the icing on the cake is that they’ll be attending.”
Speaking of cake, since De Laurentiis found out about her VIP guests after planning the menu, she says she’s made some royal adjustments, adding “a few special desserts that they’ll really love.”
And what will she say to the newlyweds if she gets the chance to meet them?
“You mean if I’m not a bumbling idiot?” jokes De Laurentiis. “I grew up in a movie family and I’m not usually star-struck but I have a feeling it will happen this time.”
