When it comes to her 2-year-old daughter, Sy’rai, Brandy is a self-professed pushover. “She knows how to maneuver and does little things to get out of being disciplined,” says the pop star, 25, who was recently honored for her contributions to African-American culture by Sister 2 Sister magazine. “She’ll say, ‘I’m sleepy,’ whenever she doesn’t want to do something. It’s hard for me to discipline her. I don’t know how yet, to be honest.” The singer’s fiancé, NBA guard Quentin Richardson, isn’t much help. “Sy’rai did something wrong (recently), but afterward, she did this gesture (putting her fists on her forehead) that Quentin does when he scores. That took away the punishment.”
Emmy winner Michael Imperioli (for best supporting actor in a drama for The Sopranos), who stars in the upcoming animated movie Shark Tale as Frankie – the fish-chomping son of an underworld Mob fish – brought the house down at Roy Thomson Hall when he introduced the film to a packed audience during the Toronto Film Festival. Imperioli looked down at the crowd, composed mostly of kids with little blue shark fins strapped to their heads, and said, “Hi. My name is Michael. I’m in this show on TV that I hope you’ve never, ever, ever seen.” On the red carpet earlier, Imperioli said of his movie role, “If there is a throwback to my childhood in doing Frankie, I’d have to say it’s Bugs Bunny. He was my favorite character when I was a kid. I wanted to be Bugs Bunny and I guess I am now, right? Except I’m a shark.”
Angelina Jolie, Queen Latifah, actress Patricia Clarkson (Pieces of April, Miracle) and producer Liza Chasin (Wimbeldon) were among the honorees at the recent 11th annual Premiere Women in Hollywood luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills (airing Oct. 3 on AMC). “Great company. This is a privilege and a pleasure I must say,” said Queen Latifah. “I’m inspired by being around these great women, especially Olivia de Havilland,” who received the inaugural Legend Award. Princess Diaries star Anne Hathaway, who received the Spotlight Award for emerging talent, said the honor was “overwhelming. I have been an honest fan of all these women for so many years that to get to just sit here and be in their presence was quite an honor.”
