Low-key was the trend among some celeb couples this Valentine’s Day. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey spent the day holed up at home together, catching up on missed episodes of Lost and Desperate Housewives. At night they ventured out to dine at Vibrato’s, an L.A. steakhouse and jazz club. Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro also spent the day at home. Dave, who sent his wife flowers, worked for much of the day, so Carmen sneaked out to pick up a heart-shaped Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake. The two later shared it in front of the TV as they caught up on their favorite reality shows. Why stay in? Carmen tells us that since they go out so often, it was more romantic to spend time at home alone together.
It was a different story for Gwen Stefani and hubby Gavin Rossdale, who costars in Constantine with Keanu Reeves. The sexy pair, who were in New York for Valentine’s Day, “went to a great restaurant, had a huge, long dinner,” Rossdale tells us. “Finished about 2 in the morning. It was fantastic. We loved it.” The mystery eatery? The elegant and pricey Per Se.
A peek behind the scenes at some Grammy-night bashes: Backstage at L.A.’s Staples Center, nominee Ben Harper and fiancée Laura Dern reveal that they’ve almost decided what to call their 9-week-old daughter. “We still don’t have a name,” Harper tells us. “Some people want to have us arrested.” Their favorite so far? Jaya, which Harper says is Hindu for “praise to god.” Brother Ellery is 3. … Rapper Eve, who described her Roberto Cavalli minidress as “an undersea fantasy,” tells us she starts work on her new album next month. Her dream collaboration? “I would love to do something with Lauryn Hill,” she says. … At the Kanye West/MSN Music party on the Miracle Mile: Christina Milian and Nick Cannon walk the red carpet together in matching ensembles, she in a silver-blue Versace dress with Lorraine Schwartz diamonds, he in a gray suit. “We didn’t do that on purpose,” Cannon says. Adds Milian, who costars in the new movie Be Cool: “This was the first time, actually.” Milian described her dress thusly: “Imagine broken glass glued onto my body.” Ouch. … Speaking of clothes, at Warner Music group party at the Pacific Design Center, John Rich of country’s Big & Rich turned up in a pair of jeans bejeweled by his 74-year-old grandmother, topped off with an Armani jacket. “The only thing nice enough to go with my grandmother’s handiwork was something Armani.” Well said.
Who’s the Boss?
At a party thrown by his company 3 Vodka, producer Jermaine Dupri celebrated his new gig as the president of Virgin Records Urban Music alongside girlfriend Janet Jackson, who is signed to the label, and pal Mariah Carey. So now that the couple will be working together, who’s in charge? “It’s her record label. I work for her. She’s the real boss,” says Dupri. “She gets whatever she wants.”
Caught in the Act
• It was wall-to-wall musicians at the William Morris Agency Grammys afterparty at L.A. club Avalon. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs partied with Arrested Development star David Cross in the smoking lounge with the night’s host, Har Mar Superstar. While country superstars Big & Rich performed their down-home tunes, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor hung out with former Smashing Pumpkin James Iha in a dark corner. All four of The Donnas, with new girl-band darlings The Like, rocked out to Billy Idol’s set on the balcony, across the way from The Killers, who caught the show with members of Franz Ferdinand.
