Jake's Puppy Love

Posted on

His movie Brokeback Mountain has garnered a Golden Globe nod, but Jake Gyllenhaal says the most rewarding thing he got out of making the film in the wilds of Wyoming was “a real opportunity to get close to animals – horses and dogs and sheep. For a city boy, it was like ‘Yeah!’ ”

Though the actor – who plays a ranch hand having a love affair with cowboy Heath Ledger – had had a “distant” relationship with animals in the past, being around so many four-legged friends inspired him to adopt his German shepherd mix, Atticus. “My dog has changed my life,” he says. And he recently added a Puggle puppy to his brood. “He was too cute not to get.”

Gyllenhaal has also spread his newfound love of all things furry to the rest of his family. “Since this movie, my sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has gotten two cats and my parents have gotten three cats,” he says proudly.

Lots of Goodies
R&B singer Ciara has a lot to be thankful this holiday season: several Grammy nominations (including one for best new artist), a double-platinum album (Goodies) and a just-wrapped tour with mom-to-be Gwen Stefani. “It’s been fun – she’s a sweet lady,” says Ciara. “She’s very down-to-earth. I met some of her friends and they’ve been great to me.”

Besides her busy music career, Ciara – who dates rapper Bow Wow – is also trying her hand at acting: Next summer, she’ll appear in the MTV movie All You’ve Got (“It’s about what young people go through in high school,” she says) alongside Napoleon Dynamite star Efren Ramirez. And working on her acting skills has made shooting videos easier. “It taught me about really living that character and being that girl.”

Caught in the Act
Cameron Diaz, shopping at Chroma boutique in Miami’s South Beach. The actress bought two red butterfly necklaces by jewelry designer Jennifer Zeuner.

Kirsten Dunst, dining at gourmet eatery Joan’s on Third in Los Angeles. She ordered the steak salad and when the server didn’t recognize her, she said in an annoyed tone, “You know me – I’m Kirsten.”
