BEAUTY AND THE BOOKS…
Long before she began kicking butt on Alias, Jennifer Garner had a different kind of dream: “I wanted to be a librarian,” she tells PEOPLE.com. “I worked in the library every day after school.” The actress, 31, shared these thoughts while hosting the I Have a Dream Foundation’s Sixth Annual Gospel Brunch at L.A.’s House of Blues. (The Foundation “adopts” first-grade classes and mentors the students all the way through high school graduation.) “I just spoke to a little girl who wants to be an astronaut,” Garner said. “And with the Dreamers’ help, she can be.”
LOVE IN THE AIR?
At Val Kilmer’s recent housewarming party at his new home in the Hollywood Hills, the 100 guests (including Winona Ryder, Minnie Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Christian Slater) sat on throw pillows in dimly lit rooms, as the place was still unfurnished. But things really lit up when Daryl Hannah arrived and spent much of the party talking to her host. Says one observer of the couple, who have been linked in the past: “They seemed to really enjoy seeing one another.” The pair also was spotted recently enjoying dinner together at Nobu in Malibu.
THE SHOE FITS
Shoe designer Rocket Dog proved to be a popular source of Sundance freebies, offering stars “Shortcut,” a shearling-styled mule, and the “String,” a ballet shoe. Demi Moore picked out the String in four colors for herself, then put in an order for her daughters. Paris Hilton selected two colors. Other celebs who grabbed the swag footwear included Aisha Tyler, Julia Ormond, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Shannon Elizabeth, Soleil Moon Frye, Valerie Bertinelli and Zooey Deschanel.
MOTHERHOOD MEETS HOLLYWOOD
Actress Frances Fisher (House of Sand and Fog) plays a hip mom to Julianne Moore in Laws of Attraction, a romantic comedy due in March – but in real life she says she desperately needs fashion tips from Frannie, her 10-year-old daughter with former flame Clint Eastwood. “She thinks I am totally dorky,” says Fisher, 51. “When I wear my exercise pants to pick her up from school, she says, ‘Mom! Pull your pants down! Nobody wears pants above their bellybutton.’ Also, she told me to flat iron my hair and it looked great. We went out to dinner that night with Jennifer Love Hewitt, who took pictures of my hair and said, ‘I’ve got to do my hair like that!’ Frannie was sitting there so proudly.”
