Barack Obama was a little late to speak to a crowd of students at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. But as the father to teenage daughters Sasha, 15, and Malia, 18 — the president knew what the crowd was up to.
“I know you may have been waiting here awhile,” he joked with the crowd. “Good thing you had your phones with you.”
“And then he said … ‘Girl, I couldn’t believe it,” Obama teased — to the laughs of the watching students.
The 55-year-old then told the students about how he would build up the courage to talk to his childhood crushes without the aid of text messages.

“Getting the nerve to text that cute girl and boy in your English class — [though] we did not have texts, we had to send little notes,” he explained.
The notes were hard — but as the president revealed, they were only the first step.
“We used to actually have to go up to somebody if we liked them and talk to them,” he told the crowd. “So that may happen to you someday.”
