George H.W. Bush’s 93rd birthday was a celebration at sea.

The former president, who turned 93 on Sunday, rang in the occasion by setting sail with his loved ones off their Walker’s Point compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he and wife Barbara Bush spend their summers.

Bush’s spokesman Jim McGrath tells PEOPLE it was the 41st president’s “first outing on his boat this summer — one very happy former commander in chief!”

Bush posted a photo of the boat ride on Twitter, captioning it: “What better place for the Gampster to have birthday emails read by a truly wonderful granddaughter in law? Thanks to all who reached out.”

In the snapshot, Bush is sitting with grandson Jeb Jr. (the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush) and his wife, Sandra, who read birthday emails aloud to the former president.

Among those who sent Bush birthday wishes on social media were his sons Jeb and George W. Bush, his grandson Jeb Jr. and Bill Clinton, who shared that he had a “93rd birthday phone call” with his presidential predecessor.

“Here’s looking at you, 41,” George W. Bush wrote in a Facebook message. “Happy 93rd birthday.”
