Daily Show: Roy Wood Jr. Says Election 'Feels Like the Funeral for America'

Updated

Comedy Central

UPDATE: The Daily Show took a serious tone Tuesday night as election results rolled in showing Donald Trump leading the polls.

In his opening, host Trevor Noah admitted the jokes would be few and far between on the Comedy Central show’s live broadcast. “This is it: the end of the presidential race, and it feels like the end of the world,” he said. “I’m not going to lie, I don’t know if you’ve come to the right place for jokes tonight, because this the first time throughout this entire race that I’m officially s—ing my pants. I genuinely don’t understand how America can be this disorganized or this hateful — I don’t know which one it is.”

Noah checked in with correspondent Roy Wood Jr., who knocked back a shot of Pepto Bismol. “You want to hit that?” Wood offered the bottle to Noah. Noah then checked in with Desi Lydic, a Clinton campaign correspondent. “Everything’s fine, Trevor. Why wouldn’t everything be fine?” she said with an exaggerated, rattled smile. “We will just have to wait a little bit longer than expected to find out if America prefers the competent, sane woman or a misogynist troll doll.”

Jordan Klepper, reporting on the Trump campaign, was at a loss for words. “I wish I had something cute to say about this, but I got to be honest,” he said, “I kind of assumed Hillary would have locked it up by now, so I didn’t prepare anything for this alternative, horrifying scenario.”

At the end of the segment, Wood solemnly summarized his feelings. “You know what tonight feels like, man?” he asked Noah. “It feels like the funeral for America. It feels like a eulogy.”

EARLIER: Trevor Noah is taking on the election live.

The Daily Show is posting live updates on its Facebook page. In the videos, Noah is joined by correspondent Roy Wood Jr., who is providing the color commentary on states as their races are called. Take Vermont:

“They’re the most pleasant kind of white people. They make maple syrup, they rake leaves,” Wood said. “The only angry person in Vermont is Bernie Sanders, and he’s just pissed because America’s not helping enough people. “

“Be careful what you’re saying about Bernie, man,” Noah added. “He could be watching.”

Wood retorted: “It’s 8 o’clock, man. He’s been asleep for hours.”

Noah also gave his colleague a hard time about his home state, Alabama. Wood responded, “Stop trying to blame for everything that happens down there! Thanks for the shocking breaking news: ‘We can officially call Alabama for Donald Trump,’” he said. “You mean the state with the governor who got caught talking freaky to women supports a candidate who got caught talking freaky to women? You could have called that two months ago.”

His comments on Indiana: “No surprise the Hoosier state was a slam dunk for Trump, because most voting happens in gymnasiums, and everyone in an Indiana gym is afraid Bobby Knight might be there slinging chairs.”

Another update began with Wood freezing and doing his own #MannequinChallenge. “I’m not doing it for the challenge. I’m trying not look threatening in case Trump wins,” he said.

The Daily Show will also simulcast the first act of its Election Day live show at 11 p.m. ET on Facebook Live. Check back as Noah and The Daily Show provide more updates.
