These are hard times for the Queen of England. The monarch not only has to suffer a pay freeze during austerity measures, she has had to stop walking her dogs on the royal estate of Sandringham due to an outbreak of seasonal canine illness. Eight dogs died on the estate in the past two years. –Telegraph

Lynn Jones, a baggage handler at Nevada’s Reno-Tahoe International Airport, has been fired after she reported animal abuse. Jones saw a bloody, emaciated hunting dog in a carrier in the cargo area and was too upset to load the dog on the plane. –Reno Gazette-Journal

An eastern box turtle went missing from the Inwood Hill Nature Center in New York City and has been on the loose for three days, but there has been little fanfare over its escape. –New York Times

Another carriage horse fell to the ground in New York City on Sunday. The incident occurred while four people were inside the carriage it was pulling. A spokesman for the Horse and Carriage Association of New York says the horse caught its toe in the pavement, while activists say carriage horses are overworked during the holiday season. –New York Times
