Rumor patrol: Days after rumors surfaced, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick confirmed that he does indeed own a dog again. Formerly incarcerated on dogfighting charges, Vick said via statement, “I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect.” –AP

The National Zoo’s panda cub died of liver and lung-related problems, officials announced in a press conference Thursday. The 6-day-old female cub, who died Sept. 23, lacked fully formed lungs, which affected the amount of oxygen passed to her liver. –Today
