And the milestone almost didn’t happen: one of three cubs born to the Toronto Zoo’s female polar bear, Aurora, on Nov. 9, this itty-bitty beauty is the only survivor among its siblings. When the cub was observed no longer moving as strongly as it had before, he was moved to the Wildlife Health Centre, where he remains under constant monitoring.
But the little guy has steadily shown signs of progress, learning to purr on Nov. 15, beginning to crawl two days after that and rolling over for the first time on Nov. 23. Earlier this week, the polar bear cub took its first steps, which were captured in the video above.
Though the cub’s survival is still considered day-to-day, we’d like to think he was showing us he’s ready to tackle 2014 with a running start.
