Canello was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The stray pup had a run-in with a porcupine in Douglas County, Colorado, last week and has the injuries to prove it.

On Jan. 7, an animal control officer was able to catch the stray — who tried to attack a porcupine, according to CBS Denver — and took him to the Dumb Friends League’s Buddy Center in Castle Rock for help.

The 1-year-old boxer mix later underwent surgery to remove the quills.

“Canello is doing well, he had surgery at the Buddy Center this afternoon to remove the porcupine quills and is now recovering,” reads an update on the Parker Police Department’s Facebook page. “It will take some time for him to heal and the Dumb Friends League will be monitoring him during his recovery. He will not be immediately available for adoption, but we will do our best to keep you up to date.”

The pup, who was first spotted by police running around on Christmas Eve, will eventually need a home. To inquire about his adoption or to help with this medical bills, contact the Buddy Center at 303-751-5772.
