Should Dressing Up Our Dogs Be a Crime? UK Group Says Yes!

Posted on

In England, the days of crazy outfits for dogs could be over: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is moving to prosecute pet owners who dress their pups up in elaborate, unnecessary clothing and accessories. Concerned about dogs being seen as fashion accessories as opposed to living creatures, the RSPCA is reminding citizens of the Animal Protection Act of 2007, which charges pet owners to “have a duty of care to ensure that all of their pets’ needs are met,” according to spokeswoman Jo Barr. Though the organization recognizes that jackets and sweaters can be beneficial for dogs – especially smaller or short-haired breeds – they claim clothing items such as overalls and boots can actually present a health or safety risk to pets, and as so, can be grounds to charge a pet owner with neglect.
