Ross Mathews had the willpower to lose 40 lbs. this year, but the TV personality can’t shake his weakness for two guilty pleasures: his “kinda mutty-mutt dogs.”

Mathews, a guest host and round-table regular on Chelsea Lately, is dad to Louise, an 8½-year-old “Maltipoo-ish” dog, and Mijo, a 3-year-old Chihuahua, the two rescue pups he shares with partner Salvador Camarena.

Shortly after Mathews and Camarena brought Mijo home from a Los Angeles farmers market, they discovered their new dog was having seizures, but that hasn’t slowed any of them down.

“Listen, if a dog has epilsepsy, we’re the house to be at,” Mathews tells PEOPLE. “We will cater to you; we will cook you food and mush it for you; we will hold you when you’re cold. We’re a good home for doggies.”

Louise, meanwhile, acts as the big sister to Mijo’s little brother. When not cuddling with Mathews and Camarena, the dogs can most often be found outside, lounging in the sun, patrolling the grounds, or playing with their toys.

“I want Louise to be like a girly girl, but … she’s a little butch,” Mathews says. “But, as a family, you learn and you love, and you embrace it.”

In their honor, Mathews has put together a list of pooch-perfect holiday gifts that both dogs would love (and will most likely be getting).

“It’s fun to spoil a rescue dog,” he says, “to get them stuff that’s seriously nice. It’s such a luxury; I totally get that. And we don’t do this every day, but it’s freaking Christmas.”
