A 4-year-old Labrador, who helped locate seven victims in the rubble following the massive earthquake in Ecuador on April 19, died suddenly on Friday, the Telegraph reports.
The pup, named Dayko, was working with the fire department in Ibarra and died from “a massive coronary myocardial infarction and acute respiratory failure,” according to a Facebook post from the department.
“We regret to inform you that the day of today the Cuerpo De Bomberos Ibarra Ibarra is in mourning because he just lost his can Dayko who participated in the work of search in pedernales, the dog with national and international certifications, passed away in hours in the morning,” reads a rough translation from the Cuerpo De Bomberos Ibarra Ibarra Facebook page. “This friend of 4 legs gave his life in the line of duty, thanks Dayko for your heroic efforts in Pedernales and in various emergencies to which you came.”
Photos on fire department’s Facebook page show Dayko’s burial, which took place with full honors at the fire base where he lived, Fusion.net reports.
“Dayko captivated us all with his tender look, and his friendly nature,” a Facebook post, loosely translated from Spanish, said.
