OLD DOGS, NEW PICS
The muse behind comedy writer Tom Cohen’s book is not just furry and adorable. “My dog Piper inspired me to write the book. She’s a cross between a shih tzu and a lhasa apso, and has an old lady face,” Cohen tells PEOPLE. “Since I’m a comedy writer, it made sense to write some captions to go along with their amazing faces.” Behold, our favorite shots from Dogs with Old Man Faces: Portraits of Crotchety Canines, a book filled with pictures of canine curmudgeons.

Each of these dogs – many of whom were adopted from shelters – has an elaborate (and completely fabricated!) backstory. “Homer was once Mao’s tailor,” he jokes of the pup, who guarded his toys with his life during this photo shoot.

Meet the Tony Soprano of dogs. “Duster is a wise guy, and I could tell that immediately,” Cohen says. “He always has that smirk on his face as if he’s on to you.”

“Barney wishes he hadn’t retired,” Cohen writes in his book. Too much of his time is now spent searching the Inter-webs for eye-lift procedures.

This distinguished-looking daredevil had just taken a dip in a creek when Cohen’s photographer snapped this shot. “After he shook off, he looked at me as if to say, ‘I dare you to take my picture.’ So we did.”

and have a lot in common with Mr. Tiggs. “He had a very royal and wise soul,” says Cohen, “as if he’d had his picture taken lots of times before.”

“I challenge you,” says Cohen, “to find a pug that doesn’t look like an old man.”

This long-haired pup carries himself like a certain over-the-hill celebrity. “He was a soft kind of personality, kind of like the Alan Alda of dogs,” he says.

Dubbed “one of the original Hell’s Angels” in the book, Roscoe has “a rough exterior like a biker guy who’d traveled many miles,” Cohen says.

Like everybody’s grandfather, he writes, “Saul remembers a better time.” A time devoid of and her twerks.
