Paula Abdul is honoring America’s idols – and their new best friends.

During a ceremony hosted by the Idol judge on April 5, seven American military veterans graduated from the Guide Dogs of the Desert facility in Palm Springs, Calif., and received their new furry companions.

Sergeant Douglas Cereghin, pictured with Abdul and his new dog Zihn, was one of the injured heroes to get a pup at the ceremony. Veterans had to complete a training course before receiving a guide dog, who will assist them with day-to-day tasks.

Abdul, along with Natural Balance Pet Foods, PETCO and independent pet stores throughout the U.S., is helping to raise money and awareness during National Guide Dog Month, which occurs in May.
