It’s been a harrowing year for Maria Menounos.
In February, the TV and SiriusXM radio host, learned she had a golf-ball-size meningioma brain tumor in the midst of her mother’s own Stage 4 brain cancer battle.
“I didn’t cry. I actually laughed,” Menounos, 39, told PEOPLE about her diagnosis. “It’s so surreal and crazy and unbelievable that my mom has a brain tumor—and now I have one too?”
Menounos has since endured a seven-hour surgery to remove the brain tumor and is on the mend; her mother’s health is stable as well.
Unfortunately, the Menounos family recently learned of another potential grim coincidence.
In November, the dog mom of four revealed on Instagram that her 17-year-old canine Benjamin may have a brain tumor as well.
“He’s under the weather — get this my vet and I spoke today as she thinks he could also have a brain tumor. Now wouldn’t that be crazy…praying my baby feels better,” she posted along with a photo of Benjamin, who Menounos also calls Piggers, on her SiriusXM show.

Since making the announcement, Benjamin has continued to make appearances on his owner’s Instagram feed, looking happy and healthy, but it seems his diagnosis has not changed.
During a recent interview on Access Live, Menounos said that she had a feeling Benjamin might have a brain tumor and is now just trying to enjoy her time with him as he approaches the end of his life.

In the clip above, while talking about her own health struggles, Menounos recalls the vet saying, ” ‘I don’t know how to tell you this.’ And I said, ‘You think Benjamin has a tumor don’t you?’ She said, ‘How did you know?’ I said, ‘I diagnosed myself.’ But he’s 17 and two months. He’s had a very long healthy life. I just squish him as much as I can and love on him.”
