“Even back [as a puppy] he was as cool as a cucumber,” Aniston told PEOPLE in 2008. “He’s just a person in a dog suit.”

A few years ago, Norman was joined by white German shepherd Dolly, now 4. While young Dolly still needed to learn the ropes of navigating the California beaches, Normy showed her how it was done.

“Really, the most unconditional form of love that you can encounter is with a dog,” Aniston has said. “They’re excited the minute you come home, and they show the same amount of excitement every day. They’re loyal, and they’re always, always faithful.”

In 2009, while filming The Bounty Hunter in New York, Aniston brought Norman along as a matter of course. In 2011, Aniston would purchase her New York City home under the name Norman’s Nest Trust.

Aniston made an appearance on her friend Chelsea Handler’s show, Chelsea Lately, and brought a surprise guest: Norm! “He’s 15 years old, he doesn’t care anymore,” she said. But good-natured Norman still managed to dress his best (like Handler sidekick Chuy) for the appearance.

“He’s a little bit skeptical,” Aniston said earlier this year. “He’s extremely wise, and ruffled by nothing. Not much impresses Norman.” We can think of one exception: We’re sure Norman was impressed by his mom.
