Hamster Takes the 4 Train! Critter's Mini Subway Ride to Fame

Posted on

For New York photographer Victoria Belanger, it just seemed like something fun to do: Borrow a model subway car from work and photograph her hamster inside. “I like taking pictures in general, and I went to school for photography,” she tells “I just thought this would be cute.” So in November, the city employee borrowed a replica – built as a visual aid for the 1996 trial of N.Y.C. subway bomber Edward Leary – and went to work.

Fast-forward to a few weeks later, and now Belanger – and her 6-month-old hamster Edie – are local stars. “I didn’t think this would get so much attention!” she says. “I posted the shots on my Flickr and Facebook for my friends, and suddenly they were viral. I didn’t imagine that within a week I’d end up in the New York Post.”

Belanger, who admits “there was food involved” in her shoot with Edie, credits her hamster’s tame demeanor for the success of the photos. “She was interested in the model and had fun playing around. And she’s also used to having her picture taken.”

The 32-year-old photographer has more plans in store for her furry friend, including a Christmas card photo. “I happen to run a Jell-O mold blog where I photograph one I’ve made each week, so the holiday photo will incorporate her and a small Jell-O mold. This year’s will be the best yet!”
