Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold picked up the sweetest souvenir on their National Geographic-granted bike expedition through America’s southwest: a puppy!

The little canine was abandoned in the wild and made his home in an old tire until these adventurers found him on the side of the road and took him in. Wright and Honnold call their rigorous journeys together Sufferfests, so their snuggly surprise companion became Sufferpup.

Aside from looking like an itsy-bitsy sun bear, Sufferpup was great at boosting morale, being cute and doing wobbly leg dances, Unfortunately, he wasn’t top-notch about planning bathroom breaks. The puppy had a few accidents in his human friends’ sleeping bags, so he eventually got his own kennel crafted out of a beer case.

This happy story has an even happier ending: After seeing the glory of the frontier with the bros he picked up along the way, Sufferpup found a forever home with a family in Colorado.
