Sandra Lee has experienced some changes over the past few months, the biggest of which might be that her boyfriend, Andrew Cuomo, was recently elected governor of New York.
The host of the Food Network’s Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee also received a special Christmas gift: a new baby bird. The white umbrella cockatoo, named Phoenix, hatched on Oct. 30. The little guy is still unable to fly, but he’s been traveling with Lee everywhere.
“He was presented to me in a large clear glass case,” Lee tells PEOPLEPets.com. “It was a wonderful surprise.”
Initially, Phoenix didn’t have much feathering and “looked prehistoric,” Lee wrote on her blog. “His fragility scared me a bit, but I swooped him up in my arms and did my best.” To that end, Lee has been carrying her new bird around in cloth baby diapers – “so he’s easier to carry” – but he doesn’t actually wear them.
At 3 months old, Phoenix has developed beautiful white plumage and is getting along well with other people, as umbrella cockatoos are apt to do, but he’s still got a ways to go before learning any tricks. “Right now, he’s all big beak and big feet,” Lee says, “and he’s trying to learn how to use both of them simultaneously.”
Once he gets the hang of that, Phoenix will likely stick right by Lee’s side for a long time. Umbrella cockatoos can live to be 80 years old!
