Colbie Caillat spends a lot of time on the road, so it’s always a treat for her to come home. That’s been especially true since she rescued a 3-month-old puppy named Maté.

The singer brought Maté along for her performance on Wednesday’s episode of America’s Got Talent, where she sang her new single, “Brighter Than the Sun.” While Maté didn’t get any airtime during the show, he hung out on stage during rehearsal, wearing a hoodie to stay warm on the air-conditioned set.

Maté didn’t need a hoodie in July for another Caillat performance, this time on Extra and outdoors at The Grove in Los Angeles.

Caillat, as a spokesperson for the Humane Society of the United States, is a strong advocate for animal adoption and has another rescue pup, a golden retriever named Plum.

“You don’t have to go straight to a pet store,” Caillat told PEOPLE last year. “It doesn’t hurt to go to a shelter first and see if you find love with one of their dogs – just like I did.”
