Since their invention by China’s Tang Dynasty in the 7th century, humans have been awed by fireworks. Unfortunately for our furry friends, the festive light displays are innately less celebratory.

As PEOPLE Pet Vet Dr. Evan Antin explains in the video above, fireworks can set off your pet’s fight or flight response. Your dog may get a rush of adrenaline from the loud bangs and crackles, resulting in the belief that his life is at risk. Poor pup!

Since it can be difficult to communicate with an anxious — or even worse, a runaway — dog, here are some precautionary tips to practice in advance of the big, loud, bursts-of-lights night.
