Do not be fooled by Cupcake’s sweet name — she is a fearsome survivor.
After being accidentally sealed inside a cardboard box with DVDs, Cupcake was transported 260 miles over the course of eight days, arriving in Worthing, West Sussex. Miraculously, she was alive.
Cupcake’s owner, Julie Baggott, told The Guardian she didn’t see her cat in the box when she shipped off the DVDs to a customer, who was quite startled to find a cat inside her package.
“She was quite dehydrate and obviously really quite scared, quite nervous,” said Dr. Ben Colwell, a vet who treated Cupcake. “She’s done really, really well, she’s responded to fluids really well. Luckily she was microchipped.”
The microchip allowed the vets to get in touch with Baggott, who feels awful about the whole ordeal.
“When I realized she was missing, two weeks ago, it was the most horrible, scary feeling,” she told BBC. “We looked everywhere for her. I feel terrible about what’s happened, you know. I mean, I put everything in the box and I sealed it straight away, so I don’t know how she managed to get in there.”
After several days of care for dehydration, Cupcake has made a full recovery … and hopefully won’t be going on any more unexpected trips any time soon.
