Camilla Cuddles a Kangaroo in Australia

Posted on

She may be miles and miles away from her dogs Bluebell and Beth, but Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, found someone furry to cuddle during her first visit to Australia on Monday.

Hours after Camilla and Prince Charles arrived in Longreach, Australia, from Papua, New Guinea, they were greeted by a baby kangaroo named Ruby Bloo. Ruby belongs to a young family the royals met at the Stockman s Hall of Fame, a heritage center which celebrates rural skills and horsemanship.

Animal-loving Camilla held the small kangaroo – who was wrapped in a cozy blanket – in her arms and smiled wide for cameras.

The visit, which marks the second stop on their two week Diamond Jubilee tour through New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand, made Prince Charles wistful about all the not-so-cuddly creatures he met during his first trip to continent as a school boy 46 years ago.

“I cannot pretend to remember a great deal about my school curriculum,” he said to a crowd gathered at a barbecue celebration later. “But I can recall in every detail the long treks through the bush’s searing heat. And for company I remember funnel web spiders, bull ants, leaches that could only be removed with a cigarette end, snakes of every description, and kangaroos that overtook us on cross country runs through the bush.”
