California’s Helen Woodward Animal Center is supporting our troops by making it easier for them to find a forever friend.

In honor of Veterans Day, the shelter is putting on the “Animals for Armed Forces 3-Day Event,” in partnership with the Animals for the Armed Forces Foundation. During this weekend event, adoption fees will be covered for military families adopting a pet from the Helen Woodward Animal Center between Nov. 11-13.

By saving the life of an orphaned animal, these families will be gifted with years of unconditional love and support, a welcomed constant in a field that is often stressful and dangerous.

The Center hosted a similar event on Memorial Day and found homes for 108 animals, a record for the shelter, and are hoping for the same success on Veteran’s Day weekend.

The Helen Woodward Animal Center supports veterans and active military year round with its Pet Encounter Therapy program, which sends therapeutic animals to the VA Hospital to help lift the spirits and lower the blood pressure of wounded soldiers. The Center also provides free pet food to the service dogs of wounded military clients through its AniMeals program.

“We are really grateful to Animals for Armed Forces Foundation for supporting our belief that orphan pets and military families provide a mutual benefit to one another,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Services Manager Ed Farrelly.  “The incredible men and women who serve our country protect the lives of our citizens and by adopting, they save the lives of an orphan pet. In return, that pet gives them a lifetime of love, devotion and gratitude.”

If you are interested in adopting a pet through the Helen Woodward Animal Center this weekend, make sure to bring:
