Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to extraordinary adoptable pets every week. Meet Sweetie, a Chinese crested who adores people, even though they haven’t always treated her right.
When the Rescue the Animals SPCA in Abilene, Texas, took in 20 animals seized in a hoarding case in April, they were in for a surprise.
“Once we got them here we found out that three of them were pregnant, including Sweetie,” says JoAnn Bentley, a public relations manager and SPCA foster mom. “Although they were kept outside all of their lives, the majority of them were surprisingly sweet.”
Sweetie, a friendly, hairless pup, gave birth to three puppies in May and has proven to be incredibly loving with her little ones. “She will go hunt for a toy to take back to her babies,” says Bentley. “To see her play with them is just adorable.”
Now 6 weeks old, babies George, Martha and Betsy have all been adopted, but Sweetie is looking for a place to call home once her puppies are old enough to move in with their new owners. And don’t worry: Bentley doesn’t believe that the approximately 6-year-old pooch will suffer from empty nest syndrome.
“She bonds with people so fast and so sure,” she says. “I call her my ‘Velcro dog’ because she is my constant companion.”
