Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Today, meet Dixon, a spirited young pup with lovable quirks.
When you meet Dixon, don’t be surprised if he has a shoe in his mouth. He likes shoes. It’s also not out of the realm of possibility that Dixon will grab the TV remote with his mouth in an attempt to change the channel. According to the Eleventh Hour Rescue in Rockaway, New Jersey, where he’s been living since March, this dog’s love of life is obvious in everything he does – and it’s contagious!
That’s why it’s hard to believe that this carefree pup was scheduled to be euthanized at a Texas shelter, but clearly he’s making the most of his second chance. The 1-year-old golden retriever/Pyrenees mix is always looking for something fun to do and loves the long walks he takes each day with carer Tammy Smith.
A few weeks ago, Smith noticed that Dixon had a noticeable weakness in his back legs and asked a vet to check it out. After a series of X-rays and tests, they learned there is a mark on his spine which they believe is discospondylitis, an infection of the intervertebral disc space. Dixon is currently responding well on antibiotics, though, and the infection hasn’t slowed him down a bit. “He has the best temperament I’ve ever seen on a rescue dog,” says Smith.
