Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Meet Slim, an energetic, loving dog abandoned by his owners.
When Slim’s family moved from their home in Florence, Ala., earlier this month they did the unimaginable: They left him behind, outside to fend for himself. As cruel as the circumstances were, the rat terrier mix’s loyalty didn’t waver. He stood watch on the front porch of the house waiting for them to return. Caring neighbors brought him food, but when it started to get cold, they called animal control for help.
“He was hoping that they would come back,” says Debbie Rappuhn, president of the volunteers association for the Clarksville, Tenn., Precious Friends rescue that took him in. “He was scared and he didn’t know what was going on.”
Once the 2-year-old pup realized the rescue group was trying to help, he let his guard down. “It didn’t take but a day – spending some time with him and cuddling him – that he came out if it really quick,” she says. “We just cuddled him and loved on him so much. It didn’t take him that long for him to come out of his sadness.”
Now the 15.9-lb. dog runs around with the other dogs at the shelter and is happy, affectionate and ready to find another family again. “He gets along with everybody,” says Rappuhn. “I would love for him to go to a family with a little boy. He’s the type that would love to have a little boy that would play with him. He’s very energetic.”
