On his new single “Famous,” Nathan Sykes sings the blues.
The singer released the music video for the track last month, and now PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the behind-the-scenes making of the clip.
Sykes, of course, was part of the English boy band The Wanted before it went on hiatus in 2014 and he launched his solo career, culminating in his much-anticipated debut Unfinished Business, released earlier this month.
“This song is inspired by somebody who I was very close to, and after The Wanted took a break, they stopped talking to me, and that inspired me to ask the question: Will they call me when I’m famous?” Sykes, 23, said in the clip.
In the video, the singer plays a rookie actor in a romance movie; his character is questioning his love interest’s motives. “I then am asking her the question: if I was more famous, would she care about me,” Sykes said. “I think it’s got quite a dark undertone.”
After shooting a particularly poignant scene, Sykes learns he might be fit for acting.
“I just found out that I do the sad and rejected look really well,” he quipped. “I must be used to it!”
